So it happened. We had our first epic fail weekend where everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. And it was still SO much fun.
Before I begin: I have a little-little!!!!! Her name is Rachel and she’s the best, and probably better than your little-little (unless you are Amanda, in which case your little-little is still on top.) and I cannot wait to meet her.
The faildom started as we were booking the flight in early February. I purchased a cheap one-way ticket home and when I went to purchase the matching one-way there- the price had jumped. 400euro jump. So that was a bit out of budget for the weekend, so what I ended up doing was booking an additional round-trip. So yup, I had two flights home. And as we will see later, I wish I had taken advantage of that.
The flights were from Rome, not Florence, at 7 in the morning so we had to take a train to get there and stay the night before in a hotel. We knew that we were going to have to do this, but for some reason didn’t think to really look into it or book anything until TWO NIGHTS BEFORE. Earth to Alyssa- you’re a moron. But we booked a hotel near the airport and then I purchased train tickets, and we were on our way. Oh so the travel group was me, Steph, Steph’s boyfriend STAN who was visiting for the week (shout out to my 2nd biggest follower), Juliette, and Nicole. But Juliette and Nicole have different class schedules, so we booked flights separately, me joining them a day later.
When we went to go to the train station we had a bit of a delay, and got there with 4 minutes to spare. We found the train, got on, and realized that this was most definitely NOT where we parked our car. The train was a local, dingy train not the model used to go to Rome. We freaked out and went to information- who told us that we actually booked from the wrong train station. Oh. Who knew that Florence had multiple train stations? We managed to get another train and only had to pay an upgrade fee, 4 minutes before it left. And we were off for Rome!!! Oh, did I mention we had like zero euros each to our name?
We arrive, eat a quick dinner, and get to the hotel. The man at the desk told us we had to pay some 2 euro fee in cash and then for the cab the next day and we told him we have no money and would need an ATM. He completely ignored us, and just said “you must pay in cash”. We asked again where we could find an ATM, and he said “only cash”. KK. So unhelpful. We literally had 8 euros between the three of us, but figured we’d wing it in the morning. We walk into our room to discover the “triple” we booked….was one king sized bed. One. King. Sized. Bed. For me, Steph, and Stan. Boundaries were definitely crossed. Also, I realized that I had put my underwear in a side compartment and not zippered it. And it was no longer there. I guess it fell out on the rush in the train station? Unclear- but that means I only had the pair I was wearing. AWKWARD. Don’t worry guys- I would wash it and then blow dry it at night so it was mostly clean the whole weekend- but still HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN TO ME?
We only slept for like 3 hours since we got in late and had to get up so early, then headed for Prague- finally. We got there, checked in, met Juliette and Nicole at my hotel breakfast and headed off to the Jewish Quarter. It was pretty great. Honestly, I was so tired and fading by the end that I think it may have lost some of the magic and inspiration and connection, but I enjoyed it. A lot.
We went to Bohemia Bagels and I got a chocolate chip bagel with PB&J- just like I requested during Big/Little Week and Julia still makes fun of me for. It was delicious. The whole place was so CTBlike- felt right at home. Awkwardly we got there right after the Bus2Alps trip (which was staying in our hostel) so they ran out of avocado. Who runs out of avocado? Not cool. We then walked around, went to Charles Bridge, Juliette got a trdelnik on the way up to the castle, saw the John Lennon wall which was just mindblowing- there are so many layers to it. We got Mexican food for dinner (fajitos nom nom nom) and set to go out to a 80s/90s dance party club. The Bus2Alps trip was ALSO taking the same tram as us but left 2 minutes earlier, so we had to run ahead to secure a spot on the tram.
That was more of a struggle than we thought it would be. We got on the wrong tram
(“I swear guys, I memorized it, the 12 DEFINITELY goes to our area” Lies.), had to wait for a different one at a random spot, Nicole had an epic trip and fall, got on the metro where Steph was stopped by ticket control in a creepy way and so we all thought she was being attacked, but we got there and it was SO MUCH FUN. Except many Czech club-goers are rude. They were so haphazard with their dancing and knocked into us nonstop. So rude.
The next day we woke up to find the hotel continental breakfast had been completely destroyed by Bus2Alps. Why was that group constantly just seconds ahead of us? Luckily, they refilled it and we got to eat breakfast before heading out to the Prague Castle!! We were a little confused at first as to what was the castle, what was a church, what we could go into, and what we could climb. We went to the Toy Museum…and by we I mean we all went and I was the only person who actually bought a ticket and looked around. I used to be really into Barbies. I played with them until I was embarrassingly old. They had all of my barbies there and it was so cool to see them again!!
So about the Prague Castle. We climbed to the top. It’s like 287 steps of pure, 100% spiral staircase. You literally spiral your way up to the top. There were times when I didn’t think it was going to ever end and I’d be stuck in there forever. It was such a pretty view though and I’m so glad I did it. Prague is so gorgeous and Disneyworld-like and enchanting.
For lunch I got my trdelnik! It was unreal. I got nutella and cinnamon on it and it was the greatest thing I had ever experienced. We walked around some more, then headed home to take a nap before dinner- we were exhausted. We wanted to eat at one of two Thai restaurants, but at 4:30 they were “full for the rest of the night”. We’re blaming Bus2Alps, because how can entire restaurants be filled. Aggravating. The hostel found us another one which was good, so I can’t really complain on that front. It was such a relief to eat non-European food. I miss Pad Thai. We went out to the “Biggest Club in Eastern Europe”, which to me seems to scream “the biggest ____ on this specific block during the summer”. It just seems awfully specific. Stan and Steph hosted a wonderful pregame at their apartment, complete with garnished champagne. Well done.
The last 24 hours were a bit of a struggle. You needed to swipe the hotel key in order to use the elevator, and I swiped and broke it and it got stuck, Nicole had to fish it out. I also freaked out and thought I lost my phone, didn’t realize until the next morning that it was in my pocket because I usually keep a spoon in my pocket (don’t ask) and so I kind of assumed that’s what the heavy thing was. There were other incidents that are not public blog appropriate, but equally as awkward and funny. We then had a HUGE debacle with getting home- which I’ll get to later. Juliette and Nicole left early in the morning, so it was a full day of fun for me, Steph, and Stan. They got a lot of souveniers for people, and went to this stand where they were engraving things on shot glasses. Stan bought a 4pack to be engraved- 1 for each of his roommates, 1 for his family that he wanted to say “Gartshein Family”, and 1 that would say “Stan and Steph” and the date because it was their 1 month anniversary. Well, the lady messed up, and combined the last two into one shot glass. So they were given one that said “Gartshein Family. Stan and Steph. 3/3/2012”. It looked like a favor someone would give out at a wedding. We DIED of laughter, it was one of the funniest things we’ve ever seen. They corrected the mistake and made two new ones, but I got to keep the mistake and I am SO looking forward to casually whipping it out at pregames. Oh this? This is just the favor from the wedding I attended in Prague. Beautiful affair. We have a very weird dynamic. So we spent the day walking around and eating traditional Czech food (meat and dumplings and lard and deliciousness) and seeing the “back roads” as Steph liked to call them.
AND NOW FOR THE VOYAGE HOME LISTS OF FAILURES:
1. We got to the airport and the machines were messed up and we had to wait on line to check in.
2. Stan and I were seated next to each other and Steph was banished to the back of the plane (bye Steph, see you in Rome), so she had to fight to get that changed.
3. We get on the flight and I am seated in front of the most obnoxious family in the entire world. There was easily 25 of them, screaming and talking and laughing the ENTIRE flight, getting up to have mass huddles of loudness, it was just so disgusting and rude. Luckily, I was sitting next to a really trendy, young couple, so we kept just giving each other looks and talking about the family the entire trip and making fun of the flight attendants who gave me a lecture on what to do if the plane went down since I was sitting in the emergency exit.
4. We landed and got off the plane, only to realize that we were not going to make the last train back to Florence, and needed a plan B. The plan was to rent a car and drive to Florence, but when we trekked to the car rental area NONE of them had automatic cars, and laughed at us when we asked if we could get a tutorial.
5. There were no flights home that would get us in before Stan’s flight back to America the next day, so our only hope was to get a hotel and stay there overnight before taking the first train home. Welcome to the S.S. Struggle, we’ll be your captains for this evening. Should have asked the trendy couple if they had room for a couple of houseguests.
6. The airport was COMPLETELY shutting down, no information stations were open, and we had to bbm Dayna back in Florence to arrange a hotel for us. THANK YOU DAYNA! YOU’RE A LIFESAVER.
7. When we got to the hotel, they had no more rooms left, so we had to walk to a different one and stay there. And I think there was a ghost in our room.
But we made it home safely the next morning, Stan made his flight, and all was good.
All in all, we learned A LOT this trip. We didn’t plan thoroughly and kind of left things for the last minute, which is really not conducive to easy traveling. However, we pride ourselves in how we handled this weekend. We really just went with the flow, and handled each minor inconvenience and catastrophe as it came with us. You can’t plan for everything, so you just need to roll with the punches sometimes. When we were walking home I really felt like the children leaving the Wonka factory at the end of the movie- all minorly scarred from what they went through, but they grew from the experience. And this was still one of the best weekends, I had SO much fun. Stan: I apologize for what happened on the last day. Please get yourself a Pepsi Max and pretend it’s from me.
STOP. PICTURE TIME.
